CNC Milling Machine

What is a CNC milling machine?

A CNC Milling Machine is like a 3D printer but works in reverse. Instead of the process referred to as “Additive Manufacturing”, this is referred to as “Reductive Manufacturing”. This is a highly complicated tool to learn how to use and use it effectively. Green and his Super Arrow program was sponsored with this tool by a lovely and outstanding supporter of his dream: Mr. Duane Schison & family.

Make no mistake, this is a highly complicated tool to use. You need to not only be proficient within the 3D modelling environment, but need to understand the differences between producing 3D models for visual effects and gaming and producing them for outputting to engineering software for manufacturing. Thanks to his stubborn persistence, Green has taught himself how to build the technical bridge between modelling for VFX and engineering software environments like Solidworks. As time goes on, more pictures will be posted of the final works.

As a fan of HBO’s Game of Thrones, Green is working on producing a series of high end art pieces in the form of magnificent wooden doors which celebrate the culture of the show. This process further enhances his knowledge and skills within the manufacturing environment and will assist in the pursuit of securing the expertise in learning how to not only design, test through rigorous digital computer airflow simulations and once approved, export sections of the model for manufacturing. Through his experience in working with composites, this tool will prove to be absolutely invaluable in advancing his dream. The CNC machine is the reason why Green decided to build his studio.

It’s one thing to know how to control this machine, its another to be a high end artist and designer who can truly leverage the capabilities of this machine for producing everything from doors and moulds to the dies for coins. Slowly but surely, this dream is always advancing forward and with the outstanding support of wonderful people like Mr. Schison and others, the dream of building our bird is inching towards the day when she will take the sky for the first time.

Game of Thrones Doors

As part of the learning curve of how to use this tool, Green wanted to produce some machined doors which feature some of the the Sigils within the show. These images are from the process work. Please note, although these are models, its one thing to model these within a 3D environment, its another to port them over to an engineering software suite which is designed to specifically machine solid geometry.
