Digital Creativity…most people have no idea just how much power you really have.

Napkins & Pens…Where would I be without Napkins & Pens?

“If you think my painting section is big, the digital portfolio is absolutely gargantuan. I love coming up with designs and ideas, either for clients or myself, and most of the time, believe it or not, most ideas begin with a napkin and a pen. I’ve done design work for a variety of final output mediums ranging from print, to HD video, web or 3D print or machining. With each output format, they each have different constraints which can and do affect how the work is produced. If you want something for print, you go down slot A, if you want something that appears inside a dynamically rendered environment like a game, its slot B, if you want it manufactured, its slot C. My first computer was one I shared with my first roommate, it was a 486 DX4-100 and thanks to another buddy, he taught me the basics of web design of click here to go there, click to go back. Since my journey began, I’ve not only produced work across the entire spectrum of output formats, I’ve learned their idiosyncratic details and overcome countless issues because cerebral problem solving comes with the turf.”-Joe Green

Today’s software suites have become so immensely powerful, most people, by virtue of their career choice, tend to stay within their hemisphere of work and never venture out beyond using those tools. Given how complex the software is, its understandable.  Green has made it a point to “close the loop” so to speak, by learning all the software to not only produce regardless of output formats, concept design all the way to finished works within print, web, 3d, games and printed/machined pieces. In his quest to build the Super Arrow, he’s had to enhance his skills by spending an immense amount of time learning how to use these formats, learn their limitations, overcome them and produce a beautiful final piece.

“With my military book for example, not only did I have to do all the contract negotiations for permissions to use various images, I had to ensure the gallery within the book looked as beautiful as it could. I built a website for it, equipped it with e-commerce and sold it to raise funds for a non-profit which promotes women’s rights and literacy in the middle east.”

Never Stop Learning. EVER!

In one form or another, Green has used all of these tools at one time or another. Each of these software suites have their own way of doing things, some are good, some not so good, all of them are complicated and the worst is when a decision is made to eliminate a software suite one has come to use often. When Green first started out, many within the field made insulting and dismissive remarks towards him, all of which threw into overdrive, his passion to master these ultra-complicated suites. Now nearly two decades later,  Green has mastered the various suites which enable him to close the loop, coupled with the fact that he is an elite-level digital artist, when he ventures directly into the engineering world for rapid prototyping and manufacturing, he is able to bring his wealth of art experience into that world and do, essentially what these technicians and engineers can’t, produce, magnificent and inspiring pieces of digital art to life, using tools that technicians use, but lack the creative spark he has. With his tenacious drive and work ethic, having one foot in the high end digital with one foot in the high end analogue, he’s been able to experience the finest qualities within those he works with and can bring to bear a creative solution, normally only found within the artistic lunatic community Green, lovingly refers to as his art friends. Thanks to the wonderful blessing of experiencing Emily Carr, with the friends he made while in the crucible which forges artists, being able to literally be thrown a simple idea, by sharing viewpoints with others, brainstorming really insane ideas, adding them to a process which would deliver a fully blown story line, when Green is approached with a problem within the aerospace or other world, that process learned at Emily Carr, kicks in WHAM! The ideas flow, flow freely, fast, the model in the minds eye naturally finds its level it needs to be at and sometimes its like watching a process take place in front of your eyes similar to how when a painting seizes you and you are its master. The painting knows what it wants to be and uses you as its tool. Its that addiction of that process which has become so fused into Green, if each atom in his body were a coin, the obverse side would be that process.

Tools are Tools. What Are you Making?

Time is by far the most precious tool you have. In life, you use tools to make tools to deal with life. They come in the form of emotional tools to process hardships or in the process to plan a party for a loved one. Its how you think at an ultra basic level. What is it that you are doing, making, communicating with, inspiring or something else? Investment wealth tools…what are you funding, building, researching, developing or something else? Tick tock. What are you doing? “I cannot begin to convey to you how truly important it is to always do right by people. It is part of my deep personal philosophy. What are you doing to inspire and build? What does the embodiment of this process represent? This process of hyper critical analysis was also part of my training: to always examine the significance and meaning in behind absolutely every project, idea, every element and aspect of each idea and repeat the process until the end. If this process was similar to a diamond with 100 facets, this hyper-critical deep analysis would occur 100 times. ‘So I ask you, what are you doing?‘”

With his strict adherence to this doctrine, placing all the emphasis on the human/soul condition, money and profit, will never displace those values of always try to do right by others, inspire, create, be gentle and kind, but ruthless in the self expectation of absolute excellence. Money is a tool to make it right, but it is simply in its intrinsic form, is a brainless tool for the expression of the individual or group. These tools have served Green right with his deep respect for public service.

Men Like Tools. Here’s Joe’s.

Most People Have No Idea How Powerful Computers Are

Most people have absolutely no idea how powerful computers are these days, especially when you can leverage all the tool offered from these software suites. “When I was told the work I did on the bird would have cost Boeing, 2.5M USD, my notions were validated.” When you can leverage the power of computers to do what you need them to do, especially when you are exploring a variety of intellectual ideas, it yields an absolutely wonderful feeling at the highest levels. When the Super Arrow was modelled up, the resources were invested by a lovely man who built it for X-Plane, it showed that the design Green came up with, could not only in fact fly, but it flew so well, it broke the simulator in certain areas (Will Not Disclose). By methodically designing and modelling various portions of the aircraft within various software suites, that design data can be directly outputted to a variety of tools, more specifically to a 6 Axis CNC machine. Outputting extremely accurate and exacting detail with absolute precision is required. The most significant amount of resources goes into the training of the individual on how to use these advanced systems. With the costs dramatically coming down of manufacturing thanks to highly advanced, rapid prototyping technology, the cost barriers to entry have dramatically lowered and by extension, placing a program like this, within reach.

The First Design

Because Green has a genuine love of aircraft coupled to a highly advanced skill set, he was contracted by Autonomous Flight Systems to produce the visuals for their fundraising efforts. This white image with the basic autocad line drawing was what he was initially provided with. He could see what they wanted and given Green’s skills and propensity for producing, from an aerospace perspective, sexy designs, you can see the final work beneath it. He modelled and shaped it, then he digitally painted it through the application of the texture map, then had to produce photo-realistic renderings with High Dynamic Range Lighting.  In order to do this, you need to have a solid understanding of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Maya/Softimage and various rendering engines. One also needs to understand not only how to produce models like this which look photo-realistic in nature, but also be able to port it over to various engineering software suites for real world testing and manufacturing. In order to do that, one needs to understand how those systems work and build complimentary technical bridges to ensure a smooth work flow as one progresses from one software suit into the next. It is beyond a meticulous process. Its tedious, cumbersome and it long, however the end results speak beautiful volumes. Please visit the website of the company for more information. They are truly an amazing organisation, led by an experienced professional and Green looks forward to working along side them through his company of Beaverworks to step this bird into reality. Green has made it his mission to learn and master all the complex software suites in the world today which in any way, shape or form, are required in the design world. From print media, digital media, websites with e-commerce, Green has extensive experience. His next journey, provided the supercomputer produced can and will match performance expectations, will venture into the crypto-space and use and apply his extensive skill sets into a visionary and high end, digital system which he will disclose at a later date.

Design is My Passion. Brilliant Design is My Addiction.

“All I can really say is that sometimes, being a designer is an incredibly difficult thing. Moments of absolute brilliance are very, very few and far between, but when they happen, it carries you over the long periods of time to make it to the next one. However, when they come, wow! Its overwhelmingly beautiful and I wish everyone alive could experience that moment of divine bliss which catches you off guard because of its beautiful and intense nature. The most difficult challenge is to learn the software tools. This will take years. Don’t kid yourself. However, once you have them, they are yours forever. Use these tools to explore your passion, your dreams, your vision as an artist and use them in the pursuit of your expression. Don’t listen to anyone who discourages you. You can achieve absolutely anything on two conditions: 1. Make the decision to proceed. 2. Never under any conditions or circumstances, EVER GIVE UP. Once you meet your goal, make sure you have another one ready to go, otherwise, you’ll feel aimless and listless. One needs a project in life to occupy their time and its your passion that tells you what you’ll never get board with, so always nurture that side of you which elicits passion. That is your reason in life. Not the pursuit of money to the exclusions of everything else, but your passion. The goal is to be able to earn a livelihood doing what you love doing. Personally, I love people. I love painting with them, inspiring them, discussing deep subjects with them in regards to life and always ask them ‘What is the best thing to happen to you in the last week?’ as a way to bring into focus, if only for a moment, that life is short, cherish it, love it and live it. You can achieve absolutely anything you wish, just commit. The Space Flag project imparted major lessons in my life about commitment, duty, honour, leadership and keeping ones word. Lead your life in a way that you will someday look back on, smile with pride that you did it right, with strength, duty, honour, dignity, integrity, joy, love and fun. Realise that you are capable of creating and causing immense harm, but through that recognition, understand that you can also create immense love, joy, kindness and oh so wonderful gentleness. Always do what you can to help others, do the right thing. If you must in life blaze your own trail, understand that path you blaze, is paved with character. Things take time, be patient, but make sure you pave your road with granite character, so when others follow, its safe. Don’t get frustrated, get activated, get inspired and impose your creative will into this world and bloom your garden. Conversely, if you choose to do harm, Karma, the ever present companion, shall as it does occasionally reward those who sacrifice hard, so too rewards others for acts of immoral crime. Consciousness and enlightenment have a higher punishment penalty for every foot of altitude you climb. Do it right, stand by your ideals of integrity, be rigid in that regard, and you can withstand even the worst of storms as those around you, see and understand the struggle, knowing that this too, shall pass. Design with love.” -Joe Green
