Canadian Flag Painting

Welcome to Canada

This is my favourite painting. When you stare at it, its like watching a camp fire. Your mind drifts away as you take a swig of your drink and music floats through your soul. With cascading colour, flowing over the topology of the painted colours, the eye is gently and effortlessly moves over the painting, persistently discovering something new within each moment.

This piece by Hanz Zimmer has played such a massive influence in this painting. I invite you to listen to this as you examine these photos.

These are OUR colours, OUR country and OUR painting.

It now hangs in the Offices of the Leader of the Official Opposition in Centre Block in the House of Commons. May it serve to persistently remind all those who pass by it, of the immense obligation to ensure this country is led well, with inspiration, strength and honour. If our country is ever invaded and Parliament is seized, whatever it takes…safeguard that painting at all costs…if conditions won’t permit it….then burn that painting. It hangs as long as we are free and we are free as long as it hangs.

Thank you to Dean Belder for the suggestion of donating it.

Former Leader of the Official Opposition Jack Layton
Dedicated to Jack Layton after his long struggle with cancer

In the summer of 2011, I was invited to paint on the streets of Vancouver in the Cambie Village by the Cambie Business Association and invited anyone and everyone to paint with me and sign the back. Literally hundreds of people painted the flag…it is our flag…and as I was approaching its completion, news broke that Jack Layton died of cancer. My buddy Dean Belder suggested that I donate the painting to Layton’s widow Olivia Chow. Although not a member of the NDP, I wanted to honour him and his service as I felt that cancer transcends politics. After donating it, the NDP arranged to have it hang in Centre Block in the House of Commons. Thank you to Vancouver Kingsway NDP MP Don Davidson for his support and assistance in this effort.

Watching Everyone Humbled & Inpired Me

It was an amazing experience to put a brush with paint on it in the hands of both young and old alike and watch them go to town on this painting. There is probably between 40-50 lbs of paint on this painting. When I was moving it back to my home studio, I large grapefruit sized blob of paint fell off and there was so much paint on it, it took me about 30 seconds of looking before I could spot where the paint came from. Once the primary painting was done, it was time for me to finish it off. I drizzled in red, black and white paint onto the canvas as a way to depict and honour the Coast Salish and all First Nations people. The texture of the canvas looked like a topographical map and over the coming months as it was drying, many nights were spent looking at it over beers with a buddy as you can literally start at it for hours, as one would a fire, and get utterly lost in it.

The Colours of Canada

With this painting, IT IS THE COLOURS OF CANADA. Painted by and for the people of Canada and like all of Green’s paintings, it has found its home in the House of Commons. Thank you to the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra for providing an absolutely magnificent experience in the official unveiling to the general public at an outdoor performance which featured military howitzers being used in a performance of Tchaikovsky.

Thank you to Vancouver Kingsway MP Don Davies for all of his support and friendship.

I have one last place I need to send one: CFS Alert
